An abundance of natural resources, including rich gold and silver deposits in the San Pedro Hills, led to the founding of San Luis de Potosi over 400 years ago. During the colonial period, gold and silver were produced mainly by Franciscan missioners.
Despite its unique eclectic atmosphere, San Luis Potosi is defined by its baroque and neo- classic architectural style. This booming commercial and industrial center is also an important cattle and agricultural zone. This city is surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes and old ghost towns tourists love to visit. Its streets and colonial structures are very colorful and evoke a sense of peace and tranquility that sets San Luis de Potosi apart from other major capital cities in Mexico.
In 2010, the historic center of the city was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site within El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (the Royal Road of the Interior Land) National Historic Trail, a 1,600 mile long trade route between Mexico City and San Juan Pueblo in New Mexico. It was in operation from 1598 to 1882.
