After being colonized by the Spaniards who settled on both sides of the Rio Grande in the middle of the 18th century, the old Villa de Laredo lost most of its territory. It was surrendered to the United States as a result of the war during Santa Anna government in 1947. This war ended with the Guadalupe- Hidalgo Treaty in 1948, where the south side of the Rio Grande was set as the border. Laredo resurfaced when patriotic Mexican families decided to move to the Mexican side of the river and founded Nuevo Laredo.

Currently, the city ́s economy depends primarily on importing and exporting products across the border between the United States and Mexico. Its traditional sport is Charreria (the city has five lienzos charros) and it is also the finish line of the Pan-American Race, one of the most important automobile events in Mexico.

Like other northern cities in Mexico, the typical dishes are dried beef with flour tortillas, cabrito al pastor and barbecue-style pork. Enjoy traditional Mexican delicacies along with glorious sunsets in this city.
