This city, located to the South of the Rio Grande, was founded by the arrival of families in 1774 and Franciscan missioners who built a parish and a colonial style square. Matamoros started out as a port and customs office in 1824, and cotton coming from the United States passed through here after crossing the neighbor city of Brownsville. Additionally, this city was the defense center against insurgents and it was named after Mariano Matamoros, who defended the city during the War of Independence from Texas, along with Morelos, and after the subsequent victory it was named Heroic Matamoros.
The Bagdad Port was instrumental in the economic development when it was declared a free trade zone in 1858. In 1866, The Republican Mexican Army defeated the French army and the conservatives in the battle of Bagdad. The city was devastated on several occasions by hurricanes which left it almost deserted and in a serious financial crisis.
Currently, its main economic activities are manufacturing and agriculture. In modern day the city has been repopulated with immigrants from Veracruz and San Luis and its infrastructure has been growing due to the North American Free Trade Agreement, improved commerce, customs and transportation.
Touring through the city will allow you to visit local kiosks, museums and some beautiful historic buildings, but it will also allow to you escape to natural landscapes and virgin beaches. Check out our flights to Matamoros, Mexico.
