Additionally this city was the defense center against insurgents and it was named after Mariano Matamoros, who defended the city during the War of Independence from Texas, along with Morelos, the subsequent victory was named Heroic Matamoros.
The Bagdad Port was instrumental in the economic development when it was declared a free trade zone in 1858. In 1866, The Republican Mexican Army got its victory against the French army and the conservatives in the battle of Bagdad. The city was devastated on several occasions by cyclones which left it almost deserted and in serious financial crisis.
