Shanghai: Local Attractions
Visiting Shanghai has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life and it has also been a culture shock! However, it’s one of the most impressive places I have ever been to. I wanted to visit, see, eat and experience it all. I decided to do it by myself with a good map and a comfy pair of shoes! I walked, rode the metro and took cabs to get around the city.
Since most cab drivers don´t speak English let alone Spanish, you have to make faces and use sign language, so just take it easy! At the end of the day they are willing to help you and it´s really fun! Here are some of the attractions I enjoyed:
Bund: I walked for hours along this pedestrian street on the west side of the Huangpu River. It is a place of contrast between the historic and the modern where you can find many stores, hotels, restaurants and bars. People watching can be quite entertaining!
Yuyuan Gardens:
Built over 400 years ago during the Ming Dynasty. The interesting thing is the contrast: within the great metropolis of Shanghai I found an indescribable peace and tranquility. Yuyuan means “happy garden” and it really lives up to its name. I traveled through time surrounded by historical furniture, calligraphy and art.
The strangest and ugliest rock I have ever seen is the highlight of the place (Exquisite Jade Rock). It weighs more than 5 tons and was found over a thousand years ago. Outside, there is a small market where I bought amazing things to bring back home that were really inexpensive. I recommend bargaining if you don´t want to be taken for a fool! Everyone expects it and they usually raise their prices, more than double! Bargaining in Shanghai is almost a sport.
Oriental Pearl TV Tower
It is the tallest tower in Asia and the third tallest in the world. I had already heard of it, but believe me, seeing it in person in its full glory has been an experience I cannot put into words. There are things in this world that remind us that we still have the capacity to be awed. The view from its observation levels is spectacular and there is a revolving restaurant from which you can admire the view if the city.
Jinmao Tower
The second tallest tower in China. You can find the Cloud 9 bar on its 88th floor, a fantastic place where the view is very relaxing, even more so if accompanied by a good wine!
